  • Abutment tabs/ears: This is a part of the backing plate. There's one on each side of the backing plate. These tabs/ears align the pads in the caliper when they are installed on the vehicle's brake system. They keep the pads in place, even if the vehicle is subjected to high heat or sudden impacts.
  • Bonding adhesive: This part is between the backing plate and the friction material. It ensures that the friction material firmly stays on the backing plate.
  • Friction material: This component is what creates the friction needed for deceleration. There are a number of materials that can be used for the friction material, including organic and ceramic materials.

How Brake Pads Work Within The Braking System

A disc brake system consists of the:

  • Calipers
  • Brake pads
  • Rotors
  • Other parts

When you press down on the brake pedal, the caliper clamps down on the pads and the rotor. This creates friction between the brake pads and the rotor. The friction either slows down the rotor or stops it from spinning.
