How To Replace A Nissan Power Steering Pump

If you need to replace your power steering pump, you can save money by ordering an OEM replacement from Nissan Parts Plus at wholesale prices. To cut out the labor costs, you can also replace the pump yourself.

It may seem like a daunting task if you have never worked on your vehicle before, but all you need is a basic level of mechanical skill and this step-by-step guide to help you get the job done.

Tools And Preparation

You may not need all the equipment mentioned here, but it is better to be prepared than to have to pause midway through your work to find or buy the right tool.

  • Socket and wrench set
  • Screwdrivers (flat and Phillips)
  • Pliers
  • Drain pan
  • Power steering fluid
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Torque wrench

And, of course, don’t forget your OEM replacement pump.

Before removing the old pump, park the car on a level surface and let the engine cool down. It is also a good idea to put on the handbrake and wheel chocks to prevent the car from accidentally moving while you are working underneath it.

The power steering pump is usually mounted to the engine close to your power steering fluid reservoir. If you are uncertain whether the power steering pump is at fault, read our guide on how to diagnose it here. It is a smallish square-shaped device with a pulley mounted on one end. Check your owner’s manual if you are uncertain of where it is located. The following process is broadly similar on any Nissan model with a hydraulic power steering pump.

  1. Drain the Power Steering Fluid: Place a drain pan under the pump. Remove the low pressure hose at the bottom of the power steering reservoir and let the fluid drain out. Siphon out any remaining fluid if necessary.
  2. Loosen the Drive Belt: Use a wrench to loosen the tensioner and slide the drive belt off the pulley.
  3. Disconnect Hoses: Carefully disconnect the high-pressure and return hoses. Be prepared for fluid spillage and dispose of it properly.
  4. Unbolt and Remove Pump: Use a socket set to remove bolts securing the pump to the engine block. Carefully wiggle the pump out of its position. If it's stuck, check for any missed connections or bolts.

Installing the New Power Steering Pump

If the new pump doesn't come with a pulley, transfer the old one to the new pump. Ensure it's correctly aligned and tightened.

  1. Position and Install The New Pump: Place the new pump in the engine bay and align it with the mounting holes. Reinstall the bolts and tighten them to the manufacturer's specified torque.
  2. Reconnect Hoses: Attach the high-pressure and return hoses to the new pump. Ensure all connections are secure to prevent leaks.
  3. Install the Drive Belt: Place the drive belt over the pulley and adjust the tensioner to the correct tension.
  4. Refill Power Steering Fluid: Fill the reservoir with the recommended type of power steering fluid for your Nissan.
  5. Bleed the System: Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air out of the system. Keep checking and topping off the fluid level as necessary.

Take the car for a test drive, listening for any strange noises, and making sure that the steering feel is normal. Then, park the car and inspect the pump and hose connections for any leaks.

Replacing your power steering pump requires a bit of basic knowledge, but it is definitely a DIY job that even those with limited mechanical skills can do. Make sure that you only use OEM replacement parts as a generic aftermarket item may not fit right and could damage your vehicle.  This is especially important with important parts like a power steering pump. Always refer to your Nissan's manual for any model-specific instructions or torque specifications.
