How To Replace A Nissan Key Fob Battery

You cannot drive (or even open the door) on most modern Nissan vehicles without a key fob. That's why it's important to take care of your key fob and ensure it's working correctly. You can learn more about exactly what a key fob is and why it is important in this post.

An important part of key fob care is to always change the battery at the first sign of unresponsive fob buttons. If you have to press a button repeatedly, it's time for a new battery. Some Nissan models will even display a "Key Fob Battery Low" warning message on the dash display at startup.

Replacing your fob battery is a simple DIY task. If you have your owners manual handy, it will have model-specific instructions. If not, the following steps are generally applicable to most Nissan fobs:

  1. Ensure you have the correct replacement battery. Most Nissan key fob batteries are CR2025 or CR2032.
  2. Press the small latch on the back of the key fob to remove the concealed emergency entry key.
  3. Insert a small screwdriver into the slots at the bottom of the key fob (where you removed the emergency key). Twist the screwdriver gently to separate the key fob case.
  4. Remove the old battery, noting which side of the battery is facing up.
  5. Install the correct new battery in the same orientation as the old one.
  6. Snap the key fob case back together and reinsert the emergency entry key.
  7. Test the key fob to verify it is operating correctly.

If your key fob battery is completely dead, or if your key fob just isn’t working for some reason, you can still get inside with the emergency entry key. Here's how:

  • Press the small latch on the back of the key fob to remove the concealed emergency entry key.
  • Locate the keyhole at the back of the driver’s side door handle. Insert and turn the key to unlock the vehicle.
  • If there is no visible keyhole, it may be concealed. Look for a small hole below the driver’s side door handle. You may need to insert a small screwdriver to release the keyhole cover.

How To Start Your Nissan If The Key Fob Is Dead

If your key fob is not functioning, there are still ways to start the vehicle once you’re inside. Check out the steps below for instructions on start-up using a fob with a key port (the 'port' is the slot on the fob that the metal key slides into) as well as a fob without a key port:

  1. If your Nissan key fob has a port: Place the metal key into the key port and apply the brake pedal (automatic) or clutch pedal (manual). With your foot on the pedal, press the START/STOP button to start the vehicle.
  2. If your Nissan vehicle doesn’t have a key fob port: Apply the brake pedal (automatic) or clutch pedal (manual). With your foot on the pedal, hold the key fob against the START/STOP button to start the vehicle.
